Physician Executive · Clinical Governance & Patient Safety · International Medical Director

Dr. Aamir Shahzad is an international physician executive with more than fifteen years of experience spanning clinical medicine, biotechnology, and global healthcare development. His work centres on clinical governance, patient safety, and the strengthening of healthcare systems — combining hands-on clinical expertise with strategic leadership to help institutions improve the quality of care and achieve outcomes aligned with international standards and best practice.

He is the Founder and President of the European Society for Translational Medicine (EUSTM), an independent, non-profit international society registered in Vienna, Austria. In that capacity he provides strategic direction for a professional platform that connects healthcare institutions, academia, and industry across Europe, North America, and Asia, and he oversees the Society's initiatives to advance translational medicine, strengthen healthcare systems, and accelerate the integration of scientific innovation into everyday clinical practice.

Through EUSTM, Dr. Shahzad champions multidisciplinary collaboration, international partnership, and professional development as engines of healthcare improvement. This work spans the Society's advisory engagements in clinical governance and patient safety, its medical education programmes developed with hospitals and institutions, and the EUSTM Academy, the Society's educational initiative through which professionals worldwide earn recognised certifications in translational medicine and related disciplines.

Dr. Shahzad's path to executive leadership is grounded in clinical medicine and translational science. After training and practising in internal medicine, he completed a fellowship at the University of Vienna, where he conducted translational research in cardiovascular biomarkers and worked at the interface where laboratory findings become clinically meaningful. He has since held leadership and advisory positions across clinical, academic, and biotechnology environments, coordinating multidisciplinary teams and guiding the development of clinical protocols — experience that informs the practical, systems-level perspective he brings to healthcare quality and transformation. Since 2015 he has also served as Executive Director of the EUSTM Academy, directing its international certification and continuing-education programmes.

His academic engagement spans three continents. He served as Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine from 2015 to 2022, and has held honorary and visiting professorships at Harbin Medical University as well as an adjunct associate professorship at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in China. He is also the editor of Translational Medicine: Tools and Techniques, published by Elsevier — a reference work in the field the Society serves.

Internationally, Dr. Shahzad has been called upon as an expert evaluator for the European Commission's Research Executive Agency and as an expert panelist for the Australian Government's clinical research grant programmes. He chaired the Translational Medicine Community of the Drug Information Association (DIA) from 2016 to 2019 and served on the Austrian Management Committee of European Commission COST Actions — engagements through which his focus has remained constant: clinical governance, patient safety, and healthcare system transformation at an international level.

Dr. Shahzad is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCP, 2015) and holds an MBA in Healthcare Management from the University of Sunderland, a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Dundee, and his medical degree (MBBS) from the University of Health Sciences. He is additionally a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in the United Kingdom, reflecting his lasting commitment to professional education.

He leads the Society together with the distinguished colleagues of the EUSTM Boards & Leadership.
