Elizabeth Leffel, PhD, MPH

Dr. Leffel is the President of Leffel Consulting Group, LLC which provides expertise for biopharmaceutical companies developing vaccines and biologics. Elizabeth is a recognized leader in the field of aerobiology and inhalation infectious disease. She has developed and characterized animal models for biothreat agents to be utilized in the development and licensure of medical countermeasures by use of the FDA “Animal Rule”. Previously she was the VP of Preclinical and Nonclinical Programs where she managed drug development programs for treating acute radiation syndrome and radiation-induced oral mucositis. Prior to Terapio, she was the Senior Director for Nonclinical Sciences at PharmAthene, Inc. where she was responsible for the nonclinical development of an anthrax vaccine, anthrax therapeutic, and a chemical defense bioscavenger. Elizabeth was the Senior Aerobiologist at the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center where she was responsible for the strategic planning and establishment of an aerobiology core facility. As the Chief for the Department of Aerosol Research at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, she conducted research on inhalation models of infectious disease as well as led teams of investigators on select agent research projects in BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories. She has been responsible for strategic planning, independent research, resource and personnel management, and collaborations with private industry and governmental agencies. Dr. Leffel was trained as an immunotoxicologist, receiving her Ph.D. in Pharmacology & Toxicology from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University (USA) and a Masters of Public Health at The Georgetown University (USA).
