Juan Nacher, PhD

Juan Nàcher is Associate Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Valencia, Spain and Principal Investigator in the Neurobiology Unit of this University. Dr. Nàcher’s lab is associated to the Spanish Research Network on Mental Health (CIBERSAM) and the Fundación de Investigación del Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia INCLIVA. The main objective of his research group is to investigate the structural plasticity of the adult brain. They analyze this process at the level of synaptic reorganization, with particular interest on cell adhesion molecules, neurite and spine remodeling and neuronal production/incorporation. The group is particularly interested in how this structural plasticity is involved in psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and major depression and their treatment. To achieve this objective they use animal models of these disorders and postmortem material from psychiatric patients. The laboratory uses different strains of mice expressing fluorescent proteins in selected neuronal populations to visualize structural remodeling, both in fixed tissue and in real time, using organotypic cultures and cerebral windows.
