Professor Antonio Facchiano is Secretary General of the European Society for Translational Medicine, an oncology specialist at the Istituto Dermopatico dell’Immacolata (IDI-IRCCS) in Rome and Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
His research addresses novel approaches to melanoma therapy and diagnosis, with particular emphasis on the identification of early, non-invasive melanoma markers and the expression of cytokines in the biological fluids of cancer patients. A significant strand of his work concerns the identification and development of novel inhibitors of angiogenesis and tumour growth, again with special reference to melanoma.
Professor Facchiano also studies the molecular properties of angiogenic factors, active peptides, and inhibitors of integrins in clinically relevant conditions such as neo-angiogenesis and cancer, together with the structure–function relationships that govern the behaviour of proteins — research firmly aligned with the Society’s mission to translate scientific discovery into clinical benefit.
Professor Facchiano serves on the EUSTM Executive Board, which directs the Society’s strategy, scientific programmes, and international activities.
