My group is interested in the development of supportive therapies for sepsis. Within the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Innovative Therapy Approaches in Sepsis, we have set up various cell culture models to monitor lipopolysaccharide-induced endothelial activation. We study the role of extracellular vesicles (exosomes, microvesicles) as markers for cellular activation and have established a range of methods to isolate extracellular vesicles and to characterize them with respect to their cellular origin and their biological activity (immunomodulation, activation of coagulation). We also deal with the role of microvesicles as indicators of blood compatibility during blood material interaction, e.g. during contact of blood with adsorbents in apheresis.
